4-8 pm – Come downtown for the Fall Museum and Gallery Walk, an evening of art openings, music, dance, and street theater hosted by downtown businesses, galleries, and museums.

7pm-2am – Music in the Blue Nile basement

9pm – Bombadil plays at Clementine, $3

Thanks to all who came down for Block Party in the ‘Burg last weekend despite the lousy weather. We’ve received rave reviews on all performances, especially those from the Greg Ward Project, Trees on Fire, the JMU a cappella groups, and the JMU breakdancing club.

Winners of the scavenger hunt are Stormy, Jen, and Emmalyn. Stop by the HDR offices at 212 S. Main St. across from the library to claim your prizes.

Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance is celebrating our 5-year anniversary with Picture Downtown, an artistic poster contest open to all local college students.

Entries should be of a high level of artistic quality as well as useful for the promotion of downtown. Submissions from students are welcome from now until the deadline of 5:00pm on October 31st. The winner of the contest will have his or her work printed, displayed in various downtown locations for the 2009 year and sold at downtown events and Rocktown Gift Shoppe. The winner will be awarded 50% of sales profit during the year of 2009 up to $1000.

Block party in the 'burg

Head to downtown Harrisonburg for Block Party in the ‘Burg on Friday, September 12.

Downtown welcomes back students with free concerts, contests, giveaways and tours. You’ll be able to check out some of the local hotspots and learn where to find night life in the ‘burg. Shops, restaurants, and organizations will join in the fun and as the sun sets, kick back on the Court Square lawn to watch Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure drive-in-movie style.

Getting there:

-Freshmen: JMU ambassadors will be leading groups to the event.

-Drive or walk north along S. Main St. – Court Square is just 0.8mi from the JMU quad!

-Public parking is free. Please observe the posted time limits.

Free activities:

4-8pm

-Live concert by The Greg Ward Project

-Food samples and eating contests will be offered by downtown restaurants

-T-shirt giveaways

-Walking tours of downtown

-Many businesses will stay open late. Look for special JMU student discounts and exhibits by local artists, musicians and authors.
